Matthew King
Singer-Songwriter
Ask Matthew King to explain his stripped-down and introspective style and he’ll most likely reply, “I'm just mumbling the obvious”. King's sophisticated musical arrangements frame contemplative lyrics that explore the disconnection of the modern world through an innate understanding of the deep-rooted emotions that populate daily life. A consummate craftsman, King can often be found behind a solitary piano, pouring himself into every phrase and melodic turn. After years of chasing an external ideal, focused on imitation rather than innovation, King learned to look inward, letting go of false idols and preconceptions, and found the strength to trust his own voice and point of view. Buried in an unending carousel of breweries, restaurants, and bars, playing cover gigs for noisy and uninterested crowds, it wasn’t until stepping into Carnegie Hall for the first time that King realized the respect for music that was possible. In King’s debut effort, “Mumbling the Obvious - The Music of Matthew King - Volume One”, King attempts to relate to a world lost in its own shared loneliness. Ultimately, the music strives to overcome creative hurdles and personal struggles in the face of an increasingly isolated world. Based out of New York’s Hudson Valley, King continues to record and perform handmade music in personal and intimate settings.
